Does the protagonist from Dragon Quest XI have a real name, or does he only have a title?
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has finally released on the Nintendo Switch. The critically acclaimed Dragon Quest XI was initially released on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS in Japan in 2017. It was later released worldwide on the PS4 in 2018. The Switch version for DQ XI was one of the original games announced for the Nintendo Switch in 2015, back when the Switch was just called the NX.
Many fans from the West have been discovering or rediscovering, the Dragon Quest franchise. The main protagonist from Dragon Quest XI became a DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo has been building up their version of DQ XI for months now. The original Dragon Quest I, II, and III are getting re-released on the Nintendo Switch. With so much marketing towards XI, Western gamers couldn’t help but have a new interest in this franchise.
Since Dragon Quest XI is such a new game to many people, a lot of players have questions on specific aspects of the game. One of the more common questions of the game is what the default name of the protagonist is. DQ XI isn’t the first game to allow players to construct a unique name for the main protagonist. Many similar games in the genre have a default name for their leads. For instance, the accepted default name for the trainer character in the original Pokémon Red and Blue is Red. Does that mean the main protagonist in Dragon Quest XI has a default name as well?
Dragon Quest XI Protagonist’s Name
The short answer is not really. There isn’t an accepted default name for the protagonist of Dragon Quest XI. Generally, the protagonists of the Dragon Quest series are most often called Hero, which is the name that the DQ XI protagonist goes by in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Erdrick from Dragon Quest III is one of the exceptions to the rules, and even then that’s more of a title.
In the Dragon Quest XI specifically, though, the main protagonist has the title of the Luminary. Luminary is what most players and characters call him, yet it isn’t his real name. Another common term fans have used to differentiate the many protagonists from the Dragon Quests games is by calling each of the protagonists the number title they appeared in. For example, most fans call the protagonist of DQ XI Eleven to help separate him from the other main heroes of the franchise.
SPOILER ALERT FOR DRAGON QUEST XI
At the end of Dragon Quest XI, the protagonist is given the title of Erdrick knight, revealing that DQ XI is a prequel to the original trilogy of Dragon Quest games. The final scene of the game even sets up the beginning of Dragon Quest III, where the protagonist of that game will also end up being called Erdrick as well.
