In order to find treasure chests, you’ll need to undertake Voyages. These can be obtained from The Gold Hoarders and are voted on by your ship’s crew. Follow the clues and riddles to find the treasure and bring it safely back to an Outpost to earn its rewards.
One of the core activities any pirate worth their salt has to perform is plundering island and searching for hidden treasure. In Sea of Thieves, these activities take the form of voyages, which are essentially quests that lead to treasure. This guide will explain how Voyages work, where to find them, and how to be successful in locating that treasure.
How to Acquire Voyages
Voyages are available for sale from The Gold Hoarders. These are slightly eccentric folks that hang out on outpost islands and can be located by their shiny tents. Just look for whatever vendor looks the richest and most creepy. Every pirate will have access to a free Starter Voyage. Completing voyages and selling treasure chests back to The Gold Hoarders will increase your reputation with them, unlocking longer and more complex voyages as you progress through the game.
How to Start a Voyage
Purchasing a voyage from the merchant isn’t enough, however, as your crew will have to decide which one and when to undertake it. Ship crews were a democracy, even with a designated captain aboard. So in this spirit, in order to begin a voyage, players can propose them at the captain’s table. The rest of the crew can then review the voyages and vote for the one they think the crew should strike out on. Once enough votes are gathered, the quest will officially begin.
How to Find Treasure
Once a voyage is started, players will all receive maps or clues to the location of the treasure. Some voyages are simple and provide a treasure map, while others will only provide a list of clues. For more information on clues and riddles, check out our guide.
Using your map or clues, utilize the Map Table aboard your ship to plot your course. Find the location of the treasure by deciphering the clues provided and haul the chest back aboard your ship. It is recommended to hide it well, in case some other crew gets the nerve to board you and steal your hard-earned bounty.
Where to Sell Treasure Chests
Treasure chests are all fine and good, but you can’t just open them up and keep the gold. Instead, you will have to transport it back to one of the Gold Hoarders, who will gladly take it off your hands and credit your player’s account with an appropriate amount of gold coins. You can then use those coins to purchase cosmetic items for your player and ship.
