Infusing things in Year 2 now requires planetary materials as well as Legendary Shards. We’ve listed where and how to best gather materials in our guide.

Bungie has made changes to core mechanics in Destiny 2 in Year 2 than you might have anticipated. Along with major changes to the weapons systems, the infusion system and reputation systems have also been overhauled, though less dramatically so.

Changes to Reputation

Asher MirTL;DR Games • Fair Use

In the past, Guardians would earn Tokens on the various planets and locations by performing tasks such as Patrols, Public Events, opening chests, and defeating mini-bosses. These Tokens could then be turned into the local vendor to earn reputation and unlock gear specific to that planet.

The Token system has been removed in Year 2, though your existing Tokens can still be turned in for reputation. Instead of these Tokens, you now need to collect planetary materials in order to gain reputation. You were able to do that in Year 1 as well, but in Year 2 that is the only way to turn reputation on planets.

Changes to Infusion

Perhaps more disruptive is the change to how weapons and armor are infused. The mechanic itself hasn’t changed, but the resources required to perform an infusion have been expanded. Not only do you need to have a certain amount of Legendary Shards, but you also need planetary materials now. Which kind of planetary material is required and differs by weapon and armor piece.

Where to Find Planetary Materials

Each planet and location has its own specific planetary material. Consult this list to determine where you have to go to find the specific material you’re after:

Dusklight Shard – EDZ, Earth

Dusklight Shard is the material found in the EDZ on Earth and can be traded in for reputation with Devrim Kay, or be used to infuse weapons and armor that require it as an infusion ingredient.

Alkane Dust – New Pacific Arcology, Titan

Alkane Dust is the primary planetary material on Titan and can be traded in with Sloane for reputation. It is also used to infuse weapons and armor that require it as an infusion ingredient.

Microphasic Datalattice – Arcadian Valley, Nessus

Baryon Bough is a new planetary material in Forsaken and can be given to Petra Venj for reputation, or used to infuse weapons and armor that require it as an infusion ingredient.

Etheric Spiral – The Tangled Shore

Destiny 2 - Infusion System Changes and Planetary Materials

Etheric Spiral is another new material introduced in Forsaken and is desired by The Spider who will increase your reputation if you bring it to him. It is also used to infuse weapons and armor that require it as an infusion ingredient.

How to Find Planetary Materials

Planetary Materials can be gathered by collecting them from nodes that appear on the planet surface, as well as by completing tasks in each specific area. You will be rewarded with materials by completing patrols and public events, as well as defeating mini-bosses that roam the area. The chests you open will also contain these materials, but be aware of the hidden cooldown mechanic implemented by Bungie to keep you from having too much fun too quickly.

Good luck out there, Guardian. Better get collecting all these materials so you can infuse your new gear. For more helpful articles, swing by our Destiny 2 Guide Hub.
