Does Final Fantasy VII Remake have multiplayer or co-op?

Can you play with a friend?
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Final Fantasy VII Remake allows players to play a classic game with brand new visuals, and some new mechanics to make it a fast, active experience. While the new gameplay elements are different than when the game initially released, some players are wondering if there’s a multiplayer element interwoven into the game. Can you expect to interact with other players to some capacity?

Unfortunately, for those who were potentially looking forward to running through the series with a friend who could take over a character, that won’t be happening. There is no co-op or any multiplayer available in the Final Fantasy VII Remake. The only thing you’ll be able to do is to compare your trophies against other players, seeing who was able to obtain more than others and unlock some of the hidden things you can do in the game.

It makes sense for there to be no available multiplayer in the game. Final Fantasy VII Remake is an action-RPG where you level up your respective party members, take on several different quests in the game, and complete them by progressing through a linear story. It’s a single-player experience. Having players fight it out in an online multiplayer battle arena, or having someone jump in to control a character would force too many new elements in the game. It’s unlikely the game will receive an update for something of that nature in the future.

There’s still plenty to do in the game, such as playing through on the hard mode, leveling up your party to level 50 or unlock all of the 54 available trophies in the game. This game is not the end of the story, though. You can expect to continue it in the next release of the game, which you will be able to play in the future.
