How to fix Genshin Impact “Failed to download resource files or network error. Code: -9908” error

And easy, but annoying, fix.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Sometimes when you attempt to connect to Genshin Impact, you will receive an error code that says “Failed to download resource files or network error. Code: -9908”. It is frustrating, and will normally happen over and over again if you simply try to reconnect. The good news is that you can fix it, and if you get lucky it might not even take very long.

The first thing to do is establish the source of the problem, if you can. If possible, long in to the game on another device, jus to make sure that the problem is not server related. If it is, the same error will occur on the new device and you will simply have to wait until miYoHo solve the issue. If not, you will need to run through the follow steps.

Close out of the game on the affected device and power it off and back on. Be it PC, PlayStation 4, or mobile, nothing says “I hope this works” quite like restarting it. This will hopefully work, as it will completely restart your connection to the internet, and this should solve any issues you had with your connection to the server.

If that doesn’t do the trick, the next step is a simple router restart, largely to achieve the same reconnection. The final option, should neither of those work, is a little more dire.

You will need to delete and reinstall the game on whatever device you are using. The good news is that this shouldn’t take as long as it would have on launch day when the download servers were getting hammered by a huge influx of players. Once the reinstallation is complete, the issues will be solved. If you are lucky, it won’t get that far, and steps one or two will resolve the problem for you. If you play on PC, you should also reinstall the launcher as well.

You won’t lose any information or progress, as all that is tied to your miYoHo account.
