How to get a resident to leave your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Time for the cold shoulder.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Island living is fun, but with limited space, you can only get ten residents on your island. What if you want to change them? Maybe you don’t like one of them very much, or perhaps you want to bring in someone new?

You can make a villager leave the island, but there is no quick and easy way to do it. Instead, you will be investing in some long term passive-aggression to do the job for you.

How to get a resident to leave

The cold shoulder

The first thing you will need to do is stop talking to them. Normally, you should speak to your residents every day to help them know you like having them on your island. If you want them to leave, stop interacting with them.

Talk about them behind their back

The highschool special. Go and visit Isabelle at Resident Services. Select “Discuss a Resident” when talking to her, then pick the resident you want to get rid of. Do this daily, all while ignoring the resident.

After some time, the resident will come to speak to you and ask if they should leave. If you have changed your mind, you can convince them to stay, otherwise tell them that yes, they should leave the island.

It might take a little while to happen, depending on how much of a relationship you had built up with the resident. Newer arrivals will leave much quicker than residents who have lived on the island for a while.
