How to beat Ampharos in Pokémon Go – Weaknesses, counters, strategies

Ampharos will be appearing for the Charge Up event.

When battling against specific Pokémon raids in Pokémon Go, you have a bit of time to figure out how to best configure your team to take on the opponent. For the Charge Up event, Ampharos is available as a three-star raid opponent, and while it’s not the most powerful Electric-type, it’ll give you a run for your money. You might need a friend or two to help you out, but if you’re a higher level trainer, with multiple Pokémon capable of using Ground-type attacks, you should be good to go. Ampharos is primarily weak to Ground-type moves, it’s Electric-type attacks won’t be able to Dragon or Grass-types. Before embarking on this battle, it’s also important to know how all of Ampharos’ weaknesses.

All of Ampharos weaknesses

Ampharos is an Electric-type Pokémon. It will be weak against any Ground-type moves, but it’s resistant against Electric, Flying, and Steel-type attacks. You primarily want to focus on using any Ground-type Pokémon available to you. Still, you can also rely on any Dragon or Grass-type Pokémon that has access to Ground-type attacks.

Best Pokémon to counter Ampharos

The best Pokémon you can use to counter Ampharos will be Garchomp, Golem, and Excadrill.

Garchomp is a Dragon and Ground-type Pokémon. It’s a slightly rarer Pokémon than the other two on this best-of list, but it’s perfect to take down Ampharos. With it being a Dragon and a Ground-type Pokémon, it’ll have resistances against almost all of Ampharos attack, and it has access to plenty of Ground-type moves that are super effective in this fight. It’s a great counter to Ampharos, and if you have multiple of them, we recommend you use them all in this battle.

The next Pokémon you want to consider is Golem, a Ground and Rock-type Pokémon. This Pokémon is significantly easier for players to capture, and almost everyone who has been around for a bit has likely captured plenty of Geodudes in their time. Should you have enough for a Golem, you can use this Pokémon to take down Ampharos. It’s not the most powerful choice, but it’s likely a common pick for many trainers battling against an Electric-type Pokémon.

The final Pokémon you should consider using to counter Ampharos will be Excadrill, a Ground and Steel-type Pokémon. For trainers who regularly compete in the Master League, you’ve probably fought against many Excadrill, or you’ve used one yourself. It’s risen in ranks recently due to being able to learn how to use mud shot, a powerful Ground-type fast move seen on some of the best Ground-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go. The same is true for using it in raids, and you can use Excadrill to defeat Ampharos.

Top Pokémon to counter Ampharos

You’ll need a complete team of six Pokémon to defeat Ampharos during a raid. If you don’t have multiples of the three Pokémon we’ve previously listed, there are others we also recommend that you can use to counter Ampharos.

  • Donphan
  • Flygon
  • Groudon
  • Landorus
  • Mamoswine
  • Nidoking
  • Rhyperior
  • Swampert
  • Zekrom

Once you defeat Ampharos, you’ll be able to capture it following the raid and have a certain number of Premier balls to catch it based on your performance during the battle.
