How to beat Mega Blastoise in Pokémon Go – Counters, weaknesses, strategies

Fight in a Mega Raid against a Mega Blastoise.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Trainers who want to earn Mega Energy for their Pokémon in Pokémon Go must participate in Mega Raids to take on some of the toughest new fighters. You may have the opportunity to encounter Mega Blastoise, a Mega Evolved version of the traditional Water-type starter Pokémon. It won’t be an easy fight, but it has plenty of similarities to its standard form.

Mega Blastoise weaknesses

Mega Blastoise is a Water-type Pokémon. It’s weak to Grass and Electric-type attacks, meaning you rely on using those two types of attacks while fighting it. It should be reasonably straightforward for the Pokémon you want to use, but you still need to rely on a robust team to take it down.

Pokémon to counter Mega Blastoise

Your best Pokémon choices to fight against Mega Blastoise include Zekrom, Magnezone, and Tangrowth.

Zekrom is an Electric and Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon. While difficult to obtain, it’s a worthwhile choice to fight to use against a Mega Blastoise. It has a maximum CP of 4,038, an attack of 275, a defense of 211, and stamina of 205. Mega Blastoise should have trouble doing too much significant damage against it unless it has any Ice-type moves. The best moveset Zekrom can know to do the most damage on this raid include charge beam and wild charge.

Magnezone is the next option you can use, a Steel and Electric-type. It’s an easier Pokémon to capture, making it a practical choice for any trainer attempting to take down a Mega Blastoise. It has a maximum CP of 3,205, an attack of 238, a defense of 205, and stamina of 172. It doesn’t quite have the same stats as Zekrom but is easier to catch. The best moveset it can learn is charge beam and wild charge.

The final optimal choice is Tangrowth, a Grass-type Pokémon. Much like Zekrom, as long as Mega Blastoise does not have any Ice-type attacks, you should be good to go. It has a maximum CP of 3,030, an attack of 207, a defense of 184, and stamina of 225. It’s a powerful Grass-type Pokémon that should be resistant to any Water-type attacks Mega Blastoise uses during the encounter. The best moveset it can use during the raid is vine whip and solar beam or power whip.

These are not the only Pokémon you can use in this raid. Your other choices include Raikou, Zapdos, Venusaur, Luxray, Leafeon, Roserade, Sceptile, Torterra, Exeggutor (Alola), and Thundurus.

After you beat Mega Blastoise in the raid, you will gain Mega Energy at the end of the battle. You will also have a chance to capture a Blastoise.
