How to complete the Johto Celebration Event special research task and reward in Pokémon Go

A small task for the Johto Celebration event.

The Johto Celebration Event has arrived in Pokémon Go. It’s an event all about the second generation of Pokémon, featuring a collection event where you’ll have to capture several Pokémon from the region, and Entei, one of the legendary beasts, is returning to five-star raids for a limited time. You can expect to see boosted spawns of your favorite Pokémon from Pokémon Gold and Silver, such as Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Sudowoodo, Umbreon, Skarmory, and many more.

There’s also going to be a small special research task you can complete during the event. It won’t be as grand as the Hoenn special research task where you had to takedown Groudon and Kyogre in raids, but it’ll give you a small reward to help you throughout the Johto Celebration Event.

All of the Johto Celebration event special research tasks and rewards

There’s only one set of tasks you need to finish to complete this event’s special research.

Task 1

  • Catch 15 Dark-type Pokémon – 5 Great Balls
  • Catch 1 Shadow Pokémon – 5 Revives
  • Defeat a Team Rocket Leader 3 times – a Larvitar encounter

Rewards: 15 Poké Balls, 1 incense, and 5,000 XP

Task 2

  • Defeat Rocket leader Cliff – 2 Hyper Potions
  • Defeat Rocket leader Arlo – 2 Max Revives
  • Defeat Rocket leader Sierra – 2 Max Potions

Rwanda: Ho-Oh Encounter

The task is primarily about beating Team Rocket members. You can encounter them by fighting them from the hot air balloon they appear in around or challenging them to a Pokémon battle at any captured PokéStop locations. If you defeat enough of them to earn a Rocket Radar, you can battle one of the three Team Rocket Leaders, who have special shadow Pokémon you can capture.
