Playing Red Dead Online with friends is typically a much more enjoyable experience than going it alone. Rockstar Games has included a “posse” feature in the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2 to allow you to create a proper gang with your pals.

There are two types of posses in Red Dead Online; temporary and persistent or permanent. The differences are quite easy to understand.

Temporary Posse

Temporary posses can be formed by anyone at any time and are free to create. They are limited to four members and will disappear as soon as the posse leader leaves the online session. These are great if you want to group up with some random folks for some fun, or don’t have the cash on hand to create a persistent posse.

Persistent (Permanent) Posse

Persistent posses stay until you decide to disband it. The creator of a persistent posse will have to dish out 200 dollars, but you get to choose a name, a camp size (4 or 7 players), and you’ll have several additional features available.

Posse leaders can choose the style of clothing that all posse members will adhere to. This allows you to keep a persistent look across your posse, with your leader looking extra spiffy. Unfortunately, this typically doesn’t go over well with your friends because everyone likes to wear their own clothing.

Leader and members of a persistent posse will also see an additional entry in the Online menu in Red Dead Redemption 2 as pictured above.

Once your posse is up and running, you can invite people to join your gang. It’s best to do that from the posse Members screen where you can send invites to anyone in your current session or people on your friends list. In our experience, you’ll frequently have to invite friends twice, as the first invite merely brings them into your online session. A second invite to get them to join the posse is often required.

If you’re looking to join a gang, you can bring up the posses menu and see if there are any public posses in your session that you can participate in. If you have been sent an invite, you’ll be able to see it in the Invites menu in your quick menu, or you can instantly join by holding the Options button when you see the invitation pop up.
