God of War is an incredibly beautiful game and it’s squeezing every bit of visual quality out of the ever-aging PlayStation 4. Kudos to the development studio for what they managed to create. Knowing that, I was surprised to see that when I first launched God of War, the beautiful graphics were surrounded by a strange black border. Typically this phenomenon is caused by your TV not being configured properly and underscanning.

As you can see by the screenshot above, this simply will not do. I began looking for a setting to alter the screen bounds in God of War but found no such option. Stranger still, this is the only game that I’ve ever encountered this problem with. After some research, it appears that the PlayStation 4 has its own display area setting that only applies to a few apps.

Head to your PS4’s settings and visit the Sound and Screen options. Here you will find a Display Area Settings tool that can be used to change the bounds of your screen. For some reason, God of War was the only game that’s ever utilized these settings, and they were way too small by default for my TV.

A quick few tweaks to align the borders with my physical display and the black borders were gone!

It’s really that easy but I was surprised that such an odd setting would apply to God of War. Hopefully you’ll find this guide helpful and adjust the settings to fix the black borders before taking too many screenshots that are no longer usable for the guides you’re writing for the God of War Guide Hub. Oh wait, that’s me.
