How to get Hoenn starters Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra

Some old favorites return.

Legendary Pokémon are not the only ones you should be hunting in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion. You also have the chance to catch the Hoenn starters within the new region, namely Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. While these Pokémon don’t quite fit the colder climate, they’re still a viable catch for anyone who wants to add them to their Sword and Shield PokéDex.

If you think you can capture these three Pokémon out in the wild, you’re sorely mistaken. These fan-favorite Pokémon are not wandering around the island, but there is another way to capture them that may elude some trainers.

The best way to capture the Hoenn starters in Crown Tundra is to battle their fully evolved forms in the Dynamax Adventure. Grovyle, Combusken, and Marshtomp are potential encounters as you make your way through the dungeon. Their fully evolved forms, Blaziken, Sceptile, and Swampert, are also available for rent, but that doesn’t mean you can walk away from them after you complete the adventure. You need to capture their second form (Grovyle, Combusken, or Marshtomp), and after catching them in the Dynamax Adventure, choose to leave with them when you return to the Max Lair’s entrance.

You may want to make this decision after you’ve captured all of the legendary Pokémon from your Dynamax Adventures. The legendaries are the main appeal of the new feature, but for those who want to run around with their favorite starter from previous generations right away, more power to you.
