Before you can locate iron nuggets you need to make a shovel or axe. You will need either of them to have any hope of locating the iron nuggets, and while a flimsy version of the tool will work, you can expect it to break. You might find it best to make multiple tools to make sure you’re not spending too much time crafting. To craft a shovel you will need to receive the DIY recipe, which you get after Blathers join your island. The axe, though, comes from Tom Nook.

After you have either option, you need to find any large stones resting on your island. They don’t need to have a particular appearance or look about them, they only need to be large stones. Go up to them to start hammering away at them with your chosen tool. After a few swings, you should see stones popping out, and every so often, an iron nugget will emerge from your hard work. If the stone you’re hitting stops moving, it’s time to move on to another one. When you exhaust all of the stones on your island, you want to acquire a Mystery Tour ticket to travel to another island to search for them. These cost 2,000 miles, but you need to unlock the Nook Miles+ upgrade.

Your island is good for exhausting all of the useful resources, but you don’t want to remain there. You need to try exploring other locations and expanding out from your home.
