Animal Crossing: New Horizons has by far had the best character creator in the series, erasing gender lock entirely and adding multiple skin tones, eye colors, and hair colors and styles. That said, the game still has a bunch of things it could be doing better.
One thing that was a bit of a bummer was that even though you could have unnatural hair colors, there were no unnatural eye or skin colors. With the Fall Update, however, this has all changed. While these features were added for the Halloween/Fall season, the changes and options are permanent. Here is how to alter your eye and skin color.
Getting a Mirror or vanity
First, make sure you have downloaded the new update. Next, if you are new to the game, you will need to obtain a mirror or vanity, as you cannot change any of your facial traits without one. One of the first messages in a bottle you find on your island will have a DIY recipe inside for a basic mirror.
You may also borrow, catalogue, and use a friend’s mirror, try to get one from a slingshot balloon, or hope to get one from shaking a tree. Borrowing from a friend and making your own, however, are the two most effective methods.
Spending Nook Miles
Once you have a mirror, you’re going to need some Nook Miles. If it’s near the start of the game for you, this may not be the best first purchase. That said, there will be two new purchase options labeled Body-Paint Costume Tips and Exploring New Eye Colors.
They cost 2,400 nook miles each, meaning you will need a total of 4,800 nook miles if you wish to purchase both of them. Once you have obtained them, go to a mirror or vanity.
When you go into the menu for skin, and there will be a brand-new bottom row of skin colors. The same is the case for eye colors. You will be able to access 10 new options altogether: 4 new skin tones, and 6 new eye colors. All new colors are listed below.
