How to unlock and build fences in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Mending fences.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Fences are extremely useful in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They can be used to divide up the island in an orderly fashion, making it look like you planned everything perfectly, and didn’t build your museum too close to the beach.

To be able to build fences, you will need to have done the following things:

When Tom Nook asks you to help him build houses for the people interested in moving to the island, set the plots, and makeup all the items that you need for the houses and exteriors. When you are finished, return to Tom Nook, and he will give you 50 fences.

After this point, you can also use Nook Miles to buy DIY Recipes for fences from the kiosk at Resident Services. Once you get the recipes, you can build as many fences as you like.

Like all things in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you build the fences at the workbench. To put up the fences somewhere on your island, put them in your inventory, then when you are at the location you want to place the fence, click on it in the inventory and choose “build.” Your character will take out a mallet, and you can hit A to place the fencing where you like.
