Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War brings the iconic franchise to two generations of consoles. Activision’s long-running FPS series will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S when it launches on November 13, and fans are wondering how a couple of specific features will work as a result.
Those features are crossplay and cross-generation play. Crossplay would allow Black Ops Cold War gamers to fight against, or alongside, players on other systems. Meanwhile, the cross-generation play would enable PS4 and Xbox One owners to game with PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S users. Will Black Ops Cold War support either of these then?
Yes, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War have crossplay and cross-gen play functionality. In an Activision blog post published after the game’s multiplayer reveal on September 9, the game publisher confirmed that both features will be supported.
The post reveals that, for the first time in the franchise’s history, fans of the series will “experience the next generation of global combat as one community.” Elaborating on that, Activision stated that a multiplayer party could be made up of five players who are “playing the game across the available five platforms.” Those platforms are PC, both PlayStation systems, and any Xbox console of the last two generations.
Crossplay was only introduced to the Call of Duty franchise with 2019’s Modern Warfare. It’s good to see Activision, and developers Treyarch and Raven Software, carry it over into Black Ops Cold War and enable cross-gen play too. As for cross-progression, you can find out more information in our Black Ops Cold War cross-progression guide.
