It’s been almost a decade since the last Virtua Fighter game made its way into arcades. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown was ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012, and fans have been eagerly waiting for the next Virtua Fighter game. Sega has been teasing a Virtua Fighter announcement for quite a while now, and it seems like we might be getting one soon.
At Tokyo Games Show 2020, Sega announced that is working on a new Virtua Fighter project. As of now, Sega hasn’t revealed whether it is will be called Virtua Fighter 6 or will have a different name altogether, but the teaser does state “Virtua Fighter x esports.” Apart from that, the teaser doesn’t reveal much and mostly showcases clips from past Virtua Fighter tournaments.
From the teaser, it is pretty obvious that Sega will be focusing on the esports angle in the upcoming Virtua Fighter game. The official website also states that Virtua Fighter “will be restarted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s establishment.”
With the recent growth in the esports industry, a Virtua Fighter game with a prominent focus on competition might turn out to be the next big thing. It remains to be seen when we get to see more about the project.
