Rage 2: How to Unlock the Grav-Jump Ability

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

You can unlock a useful double-jump early in Rage 2, but you have to do a little work for it. Our guide shows you where you need to go.

It may be one of the most ubiquitous abilities in games, but there’s always something satisfying about being able to double-jump. When you want to soar over your enemies heads or just make it look like you didn’t actually misjudge that failed jump you just attempted, double-jump has your back. Fortunately, it’s one of the earliest abilities you can unlock in Rage 2.

The game actually steers you toward the ability early on if you’re following the suggested route. When you first head out from Vineland after Rage 2’s intro, Lily directs you to head toward Gunbarrel to meet John Marshall. If you set your waypoint there and follow the path the game lays out for you, you’ll end up driving right past Great Crack Ark, where you find the Grav-Jump ability. It’s easy to find any time if you don’t grab it then, though. It’s due south of Gunbarrel, just over the border from Twisting Canyons to Broken Tract, on a structure hanging over a cliff.

Any time you want to open an Ark, you’ll first have to clear out the hostiles who have made their camp there. In this case, you’re facing off against a bunch of scrappy Goon Squad soldiers. They’re pretty weak, but at this point in the game, you probably are, too. Dash is one of the few tools that will be at your disposal if you’re taking this Ark on just after leaving Vineland, so make good use of it. The entrance to Junkers Pass has a handful of goons guarding it, including one who lobs grenades, a couple who take shots from a protected overpass, and one wearing thick armor. Once you get past this group, another one awaits you on the other side of the wall. They’re easier to take down since you’ll have a relatively safe position to shoot from. Just watch out for anyone who charges you.

After you fight your way past about a dozen armed maniacs, you can access the Ark. Hold Focus to open it, then activate the Nanotrite Injector inside. You’ll play through a brief tutorial of how to use Grav-Jump, but it’s really as simple as jumping, then jumping again in mid-air.

On the way back to your car, you’ll be ambushed by another Goon Squad group. They’re a bit tougher than the previous one, especially since they have a much better positioning. Make good use of the natural cover in the area, but don’t stay in one place for too long. Use Dash and Grav-Jump to reposition yourself or head for the high ground if you need to.
