Should you catch Calyrex with Spectrier or Glastrier in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra?

What is the better option?
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

There are Pokémon that have several forms in Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion, and there are some choices you need make regarding what Pokémon you want to catch. For example, you have the chance to catch Regidrago or Regieleki. The first a Dragon-type and the other is an Electric-type. You have to choose between the two and cannot pick both. The same goes for Calyrex, the new legendary Pokémon that has a horse. You have to pick between Spectrier, a Ghost-type horse, or Glastrier, an Ice-type.

The choice happens early on in the Crown Tundra story quest with Calyrex. The quest requires you to grab carrot seeds from the villagers of Freezington, and once you bring those seeds to Calyrex, you’re given two locations to visit. One is a field in the middle of the snow, and the other is a field in the middle of a graveyard. If you choose the field in snow, you receive Glastrier. The field at the cemetery gives you a carrot to summon Spectrier. Much like Regidrago and Regieleki, you cannot choose both and have to make a decision.

What are the big differences between the Pokémon? When Calyrex obtains his horse, it sits atop it when you encounter it and combines with it. Calyrex is a Psychic-type, and with the steed, it also becomes a Ghost-type or an Ice-type. Calyrex’s stats change depending on the choice.

Calyrex with Spectrier

  • Health: 100
  • Attack: 85
  • Defense: 80
  • Special Attack: 165
  • Special Defense: 100
  • Speed: 150

Calyrex with Glastrier

  • Health: 100
  • Attack: 165
  • Defense: 150
  • Special Attack: 85
  • Special Defense: 130
  • Speed: 50

Those are the big differences between the choices. Calyrex with Spectrier has a higher special attack rating and speed. But Calyrex with Glastrier has a higher attack, defense, and special defense. Calyrex with Glastrier might serve certain players better, but it depends on what they want to play.

For those who want to acquire both choices, you need to have a copy of Pokémon Sword and Shield and pick the opposite choice on your spare copy of the game. If you only have one copy of the game, you can only pick one.
