The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs – How to Adopt a Pet

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

If you own The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs, you’re likely looking to add some members to your family. While this can be done via Create a Sim, we show you how to adopt a pet using the in-game adoption option, or how to adopt a stray if you stumble across one in your travels.

The Cats and Dogs expansion for The Sims 4 has been out for a bit, but I’ve only just started to get my feet wet with this latest DLC. Of course, upon creating my family I didn’t pass up the opportunity to add Bear, a German Shepherd that was created after my childhood dog of the same name and breed. However, I came across a sick dog named Rosie in the park one day. Unable to take Rosie to the vet because I didn’t own her, I scrambled to figure out how to adopt a pet. Unfortunately, Rosie left before I figured it out, and I haven’t been able to find her since.

There are a couple of ways that you can adopt a pet in The Sims 4. Of course, you must own the Cats and Dogs DLC, but after that it’s as simple as using your home computer. Well, any computer. If you’re poor and don’t have one, visit the library.

Once at a computer, you’ll need to visit the Household option, then look for Adopt. You will have the option to adopt a cat or dog for $200. You can select up to three from the options, at which point you’ll get a visit from the adoption representative and your three potential pets. Take some time to get to know they by using the interaction options like you normally would. Adopt the ones you like and skip the ones you don’t. When you’re done, click on the adoption representative and choose the End Evaluation option.

You can also adopt a stray pet that you find wandering the street, but this is handled a bit differently. In this case, you would interact with the pet using the normal interaction options. The problem that some are having is that the option to adopt them isn’t appearing. Here’s where Rosie did me a solid.

While doing some in-game research for this article, I was able to find the option to travel with Rosie, but she couldn’t come and hang out at my lot. I traveled with her to the dog park (obviously), and with a full bar of friendship I tried everything I could to adopt her, but never had the option. I used the cheats to open Rosie up in the Create a Sim panel and, behold, Rosie was already part of a family. Clearly, you’re not going to be able to adopt a pet that belongs to another household. It wasn’t all bad, though. Rosie’s owner was playing chess in the dog park, so there was a fight had based on the fact when I met her she was sick. Take care of your dog, man!

I’ve still not been able to identify and adopt a stray (I’m not trying very hard), but I know it can be done. My advice is to give it a shot if you come across a pet that could be a stray. If the option isn’t there, use the cheats to enter the Create a Sim for that pet, and see if they are a part of a family. In fact, you could add that pet to your family using cheats if you’re determined to have them.
