Link in the Legend of Zelda isn’t just an adventurer/serial pot smasher—he’s also a musical prodigy. Like in many games in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening features an Ocarina for Link to use to express his creative side and pull off some music-based magic. Once you’ve grabbed the ocarina, there are three songs to learn in Link’s Awakening you need help you on your journey.

The Ballad of the Wind Fish

The first tune you’ll learn in Link’s Awakening is the Ballad of the Wind Fish. You’ll discover this song from Marin, the girl who rescued you at the beginning of the game, and it’s the same song she sings to wake the sleeping walrus blocking your way to Yarna Desert.

Once you get Marin to wake the walrus, you’re going to find her in Animal Village singing to an audience of woodland creatures. Talk to her there, and she’ll teach you the Ballad of the Wind Fish. You can only get to Animal Village after finishing the third dungeon, Key Cavern. If you’re not at that point in the game yet and Marin isn’t at Animal Village, you should be able to find her back at Mabe Village instead. You’ll still need to bring Marin to wake the walrus to progress from here. This song will come in handy later when you need to awaken the Wind Fish.

Manbo’s Mambo

Shortly after learning Ballad of the Wind Fish, you can get Manbo’s Mambo. You’ll need to finish the fourth dungeon, Angler’s Tunnel, and get the flippers there. Immediately after leaving Angler’s Tunnel, you can swim through the water to the left of the dungeon’s entrance to reach another cave. There you’ll find Manbo, who teaches you the second song.

Manbo’s Mambo is extremely useful since it lets you fast travel. Any time you play the song, you can instantly travel to any warp point you’ve discovered or get sent back to the entrance of any dungeon.

Frog’s Song of Soul

The final ocarina song in Link’s Awakening is in the fifth dungeon, Catfish’s Maw. You’ll need the hookshot you get in that dungeon, plus 300 rupees to unlock it.

Head southeast of Mabe Village to the Ukuku Prairie, and you’ll find a spot where there’s a chasm in the ground you can cross with the hookshot. Zip across to the Signpost Maze. Complete the maze by reading each sign and following their directions, and eventually, you’ll find a staircase leading down.

In the underground chamber, you’ll meet Mamu, who teaches you Frog’s Song of Soul in exchange for 300 rupees. You won’t need this song immediately. It only becomes useful when you need to enter the eighth dungeon, so don’t feel like you need to rush out and grab this one right away.
