Each month, players in Pokémon Go have the chance to capture a brand new Pokémon if they complete seven research tasks in the game. For the month of June 2020, the Research Breakthrough Pokémon is Trapinch, the Ant Pit Pokémon.

Trapinch will be available starting on June 1 at 1:00pm until July 1 at 1:00pm PST. Any time you complete the seventh research task, you will also receive their research task reward and a guaranteed Trapinch encounter. You will need to visit PokéStops to obtain additional research tasks. However, developer Niantic has made it, so all trainers receive a new research task every day without having to visit one due to the development team wanting to encourage all players to stay inside to help lessen the spread of COVID-19.

Trapinch is the first evolution of several, the final being Flygon, a Ground and Dragon-type Pokémon. It has a max CP of 2,661, an attack of 205, a defense of 168, and stamina of 190. While it is not a Pokémon you want to take with you into the Master League, it can do some fairly heavy damage in the Ultra League, allowing Pokémon up to 2,500 to participate. It’s best moves include dragon tail and dragon claw, dragon tail and earth power, dragon tail and earthquake, or mud shot and earthquake. A Flygon with any of these abilities will do prove extremely useful, but you want to avoid having it at the highest CP, so it remains viable in the Ultra League.

You have until July 1 to participate to complete as many research tasks. You can only do one per day to earn the stamp. Once you have all seven, the random encounter will be available for you to turn in at the top of the research tasks tab in Pokémon Go.
