Call of Duty War Zone, the latest big battle royal game to make it to market, is available on all of the major platforms on March 10., including PS4, Xbox One, and PC. With the Call of Duty formula proving to be a great fit to the battle royale experience in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, but stuck behind a purchase of the full game to play, Warzone should allow Activision to develop and add content independently of the mainline series.Â
It uses a huge map that encompasses several stages from the series history, as well as guns and pickups that fans have come to expect from the series. It’s a standalone game, meaning that it doesn’t require a copy of 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to play it, while the free to play element removes the barrier for download.
But what about mobile platforms? Call of Duty Mobile has become one of the most popular mobile games of all time in a very short space of time, having already racked up over 100 million in downloads over both iOS and Android devices. Also, a free to play app, it includes multiplayer over several classic maps.
The foundation for Warzone mobile is there, with the mobile app considered to be relatively stable across most devices. However, there’s currently no official word as to whether this new game will come to handhelds. Games such as PUBG Mobile and Free Fire have proven that a stable shooting game can work in the battle royale format on the small screen, but both of these use the third-person perspective on top of the first person. A wholely first-person experience that is fair and fun while be stable is a huge undertaking, and you would think that compromises would need to be made.
While there’s unlikely to be a mobile version soon, the popularity of Call of Duty Mobile may encourage Activision to invest in a mobile version for Warzone, providing that the main platforms perform well.
