Despite Sony being adamant about the PlayStation 5 representing a new generation, yesterday’s PlayStation Showcase revealed that some of the biggest hitters for the new console will also be on PS4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is amongst these titles previously thought to be PS5 exclusives, arriving on PS4 the same day the PS5 launches. While the release date for Guerrilla’s Horizon Forbidden West is farther out in 2021, will this open-world PS5 title still be available for the current PlayStation console?
The PlayStation Blog officially confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West will have a PlayStation 4 version. Guerrilla also relayed the same news on their Twitter account. This information was not present in the PlayStation Showcase video and was more of a footnote that observers slowly took notice of later in the day. Those invested in Aloy’s story after playing Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 can continue it on the same platform.
This sequel will still take advantage of the hardware features of the PS5 — the SSD will allow for faster loading times, and the DualSense controller will offer a unique experience that the PS4 will not. Still, PlayStation fans may be concerned that having Horizon Forbidden West will “hold back” the game from a technical standpoint, as the game is still in development with both platforms in mind. Regardless, this is good news for PS4 owners who may be hesitant to buy the PS5 for one reason or another.
Luckily for those people, buying the PS4 version will have them eligible for a free upgrade to the PS5 version, should they ever end up purchasing a PS5 down the line. The digital release of Horizon Forbidden West will include a free upgrade, while the disc version will provide a free upgrade for owners of the PS5 disc drive model.
