According to Ubisoft founder and CEO Yves Guillemot, the next Xbox (Xbox One X 2) and PlayStation consoles (PS5) might be the last before the brands shift to a total cloud-based system in the likes of PlayStation Now.
“I think we will see another generation, but there is a good chance that step-by-step we will see less and less hardware,” Guillemot told Variety, something quite different from the mid-gen consoles model we’ve seen this generation.
“With time, I think streaming will become more accessible to many players and make it not necessary to have big hardware at home (…) There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming, all of us.”
It might still take a while before we see these plans been made public, though, as from the most recent rumors and estimations PS5 won’t be out before 2020. It’ll be more and more time for those streaming services to further develop, it seems.
We’ll see at E3 2018 whether there’ll be more room for this kind of statements and information to be delivered, most probably outside of the media briefings that should be focused on games as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X have just been released.
