The intel was revealed as part of the financial results provided at the end of the three months culminated in June 30, 2018. This means that, as for the quarter, a total of 3.2 million consoles were shipped during the quarter, down 0.1 million from the previous.
The very slight reduction in terms of PlayStation 4 sold has not had an impact for what matters the future sales of the platform. Sony has indeed increased the amount of consoles it plans to ship in fiscal year 2018 (April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019) from 16 to 17 million units.
As we get closer to the end of the generation, it’s obvious console sales start to reduce over time, but it looks like Sony doesn’t really worry about that, also thanks to a very strong software lineup coming in the last year of PS4’s lifecycle.
It’ll be interesting to see the impact of Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has just gone gold, on the sales once it launches this September. Considering how much the IP is popular, we bet it’ll be huge.
