At E3 2018, id Software came out with a quick teaser announcing that they were working on something called DOOM Eternal. So, not simply “DOOM 2,” which was what people were expecting them to go on after the original 2016 reboot.
But why that choice? As revealed in a recent interview with IGN, there was a lot of thinking and discussion behind the name “DOOM Eternal,” as the developers really wanted something DOOM-like but were not totally happy with the branding of their first new game.
“You hear us say it all the time, we call it Doom 2016, and the internet has called it Doom 2016. We go back and forth on whether it was a mistake to call it Doom. I still don’t think it was a mistake, because we really were kind of drawing a new line in the sand,” executive producer Marty Stratton said.
Anyway, according to game director Hugo Martin, do some researches about DOOM 2016 and you’ll find out that it is “a giant pain in the butt, because you get all this [other] stuff.”
So the decision was to find something “that had meaning and spoke to what we were doing with lore and how we want people to feel about the game. And Doom Eternal was something that just felt right.”
The team even addressed the newest Halo Infinite name, and said they were glad they had not picked up the “Infinite” branding at least as much as 343 Industries and Microsoft are about not picking up “Eternal” for their name.
DOOM Eternal has not been attached with a release date or window yet, but it’s coming out on Nintendo Switch on the same day of the other PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions this time around.
