Platform holders are starting to ramp up their efforts when it comes to next-generation consoles and, while Microsoft has gone public with what their aiming for, Sony is apparently still working undercover.

But it is working, at least, as revealed in a tweet over the weekend by Windows Central editor Jez Corden. Corden states he’s “heard a few rumors” which claim Sony is indeed working on implementing a big infrastructure change for the next PlayStation Network.

“Heard a few rumors Sony might be working on a big infrastructure/platform update for PSN in time for PS5. They’re not resting on their laurels when it comes to cloud it seems,” he said.

There’s a chance the Japanese console maker might be looking into making a big shift for its net platform. Perhaps the effort is to make PlayStation Now a bigger reality in comparison with what it is… now, so that they can also implement the download of games (Xbox Game Pass style) and bring the service all over the world, something it has failed to do thus far.

That’s just speculation for the moment, but it’s clear PlayStation Network also needs to become more reliable, so it could just be an effort to make this happen and get a serious Xbox Live competitor from the infrastructure point of view.

The idea is, anyway, that this platform should be a more meaningful part in the way the PlayStation 5 works, not simply a service it works around. Is Sony capable of doing so? And what’s your opinion about this PSN ramping up?
