Telltale Games has announced a “majority studio closure”, following rumors of the development team being shut down and some of the much anticipated video games series for 2019 being cancelled abruptly.
“Today Telltale Games made the difficult decision to begin a majority studio closure following a year marked by insurmountable challenges,” a statement from Telltale Games said over the weekend.
“A majority of the company’s employees were dismissed earlier this morning, with a small group of 25 employees staying on to fulfill the company’s obligations to its board and partners,” the note followed.
CEO Pete Hawley issued this statement:
“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales.
With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry. Telltale will issue further comments regarding its product portfolio in the coming weeks.”
In a tweet issued a few minutes later, Hawley added that the studio has not been shut down yet but will keep working with a core team of 25 people to complete the obligations with “partners”, which is reportedly Netflix over the Minecraft: Story Mode streaming version that was announced a few months ago.
Game projects Stranger Things and The Wolf Among Us 2 are most certainly cancelled, while The Walking Dead: The Final Season is probably ending with next week’s episode 2, even though the other episodes had already been planned. (via USGamer)
