One of the biggest news this year is that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has received a brand new battle royale mode called Blackout.
This mode was thought originally in order to be a good replacement for the lack of a single-player story mode campaign, but it turned being more successful than expected.
Indeed, the battle royale is living a good momentum thanks to the efforts of Fortnite and PUBG, and there was room for a triple-A series like Call of Duty to get in the genre.
According to Michael Pachter, though, Blackout could get even bigger thanks to a switch to a standalone free to play model next year.
“I think you’re going to see a migration. The leader in this is probably going to be Activision, and probably with [Black Ops 4’s] Blackout,” he said.
“So my prediction is that you’re going to see Blackout made free-to-play sometime in 2019, likely months before the next Call of Duty.”
“And you’ll see that audience expand, since it’s free, to 100 million people and they’ll suddenly be generated $20 million or $30 million a month more,” he added.
Considering that more players could join the Blackout battle royale and that Activision could make more profit out of it, looks like it’d be a win-win for everyone involved.
