Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated games this generation, and probably one of its biggest mysteries.

As we get closer and closer to getting more information about it, we also learn interesting details about its very long development process.

And, actually, we discover that the development process itself has not been as long as one might guess by only looking at the original reveal.

Indeed, as shared by lead cinematic animator Maciej Pietras during an interview with a French outlet, the actual development only kicked off after the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s expansion Blood and Wine.

Blood and Wine, the second expansion of the acclaimed action RPG, released on May 31, 2016 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

This means that Cyberpunk 2077’s proper development only started in the second half of 2016, with the game currently being in the making for arond one year and a half.

So, the fact we’ve known about the existence of the game since 2012 doesn’t mean that the work on its started that early.

On the contrary, it seems like we’ll have to wait much longer for it to get ‘real’.

If you consider that games usually take 3 to 4 years to be launched, and that CD Projekt RED drops its titles only ‘when they’re ready’, it looks like even a 2020 release window could be too ambitious.
