The original Devil May Cry is coming to the Nintendo Switch this summer.

The original Devil May Cry has been announced for the Nintendo Switch and will be arriving this summer, according to a tweet from the official Devil May Cry Twitter account.

The game, initially launched for the PlayStation 2 in 2001, will be making its way to Nintendo’s console/handheld hybrid at some point in the summer, although no exact date has been revealed yet.

Gamers have been hoping that Devil May Cry would make the jump to Switch for a while now, although I am unsure if anybody thought it would the series starting game that would do it. This could be seen as a bit of a tester for the series on the console. When asked about a Devil May Cry 5 port for the Nintendo Switch back in March, game director Hideaki Itsuno said the fans may need to show Capcom on the Switch some love to make it happen. It would seem that this will be the best way to get Capcom to understand the desire for the Devil May Cry series on Nintendo’s console.

It does also open up another interesting possibility. If the games do well on Switch, and we end up seeing a few, or even all, of the games from the series on the console, could we end up seeing Dante in Smash Bros? Hideaki Itsuno has already said that in his opinion, bringing the series to Switch would be the first step to making that happen.

It is still hard to move on from how odd it feels to have the original game be the one that is being launched on Switch, especially with a HD Collection version of that very game already being available on other platforms. Still, it is better to have any installment of the excellent action series on the platform than none at all.
