Sony will go big with streaming during the next generation of consoles, and this has been hinted at by their partnership with Microsoft on cloud gaming.
What hasn’t been mentioned yet was PlayStation Now, which almost led us to believe to some rebranding or a new beginning for streaming efforts from the Japanese platform owner.
However, at the latest earnings call with investors and analysts, Sony has outlined its strategy for the future of PlayStation Now, which remains central in the plan for PS4 and PS5.
As shared in a slide, PlayStation Now will support “1080p and beyond” in terms of resolution in the future.
That would be a great jump ahead for the platform as it only reaches 720p as of now, and with Project xCloud going 1080p since launch later this year and Google Stadia betting on 4K that’s the least they can do.
Also, Sony is working to “maximize off-console opportunity,” which means they’re going to do their best in order to bring the service on other platforms.
As you might remember, PlayStation Now was born like this, streaming on TVs and mobile phones, but that was quietly scaled down over the years to PS4 and PC.
Now, with this in mind, they’re probably going mobile similarly to Stadia and xCloud, taking advantage of Microsoft Azure platform for that, we’d say.
Sony also says that the existing capacity of servers will grant support for up to 5 million subscribers, and that will probably expand as they foresee an increase of over 50% of the growth of subscribers per year.
