Sony’s global head of research and development Dominic Mallinson has revealed that the company doesn’t plan on releasing PlayStation VR 2 alongside PS5.
Mallinson pointed out that, with the launch of a new console, consumers will already have a lot to look forward, and adding more hardware would not make much sense.
On top of this, it also looks like that Sony might be satisfied enough with the specs of the already existing headset and would focus on having a more performing hardware at the base than the current PS4/PS4 Pro.
“There’s no reason for us to coincide it with a new console,” he said at Toronto’s Collider.
“From the point of view of the consumer, to be bombarded with many many things — oh, you have to buy this, you have to buy that — is a message that we don’t want to send. In some ways, it’s good to have a little breathing space between those things.”
It’s also worth noting that, while he did “applaud” efforts from other companies in the mobile VR space, Sony doesn’t plan on working on something similar, either.
“I do applaud them for doing something that is mobile, but it’s something you would more likely do in a private living room space,” Mallinson shared.
“I don’t think you’d go out on the road and do this stuff. But I think having no wires, making it light and unencumbered, it is great. So I think going mobile for both reasons is important.”
Quite honestly, together with a much-improved quality of the graphics, that of the wires is the biggest challenge Sony would be facing when building PlayStation VR 2.
The company knows that and is also keen to work on different PS VR models coming at different prices, which would involve the presence of wires or not for a higher RRP.
