Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order allows players to assume the role of one of the last Jedi survivors after the Empire issued the Order 66 in the Star Wars universe. That guy is Cal Kestis, a white man that is asked to save the entire world — something we’ve already seen happen in lots of other stories.
Respawn Entertainment had considered a few other options before selecting Cal as the main protagonist in the game. One of those options included an alien and a woman, with the latter ruled out after the new Star Wars movies had a woman as the protagonist, Rey.
“Yes, we talked about doing an alien creature, we talked about different gender…,” Stig Asmussen, Jedi: Fallen Order’s game director, told Game Informer in a recent interview. “We arrived at where we were because at the time Rey was the thing for Star Wars, and it made a lot more sense to have a male protagonist.”
Said of the female protagonist, the other option was for an alien race, something that the developers have ruled out because it would have lacked the “human collection” element.
“And ultimately we didn’t go with alien race… we felt like, no pun intended, it would alienate a lot of people,” said Asmussen. “We wanted to make sure there was a real human connection to the character that we have in the game.”
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order releases on November 15, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was criticized for lack of personality and for being too attached to the Uncharted formula (on top of issues with the lightsabers), but it’s going more Metroidvania than anticipated.
