In an interview with IGN at Gamescom, Geoff Keighley has shared some more details about the multiplayer component in Death Stranding, which has been teased multiple times but never officially revealed in a trailer or a statement from Kojima Productions.

The developers have told us multiplayer is considered an essential component to the game, at least in terms of the message the game wants to convey to players. So, what’s it going to look like when it releases?

“What he’s doing with the online aspects of it, I think people aren’t quite fully ready for what he’s doing,” Keighley, who has hosted Gamescom Opening Night Live on Monday, August 19, teased as usual when asked about that.

But, you may notice Keighley is talking about “online aspects,” not a proper multiplayer component. It matches something closer to Dark Souls than a more traditional experience found in Call of Duty or Metal Gear Online.

The game’s director, Hideo Kojima, said at the ONL that when multiple Sam characters pee on mushrooms something extraordinary happens. Keighley built on that statement by adding, “you got to take that concept and think about how that applies to everything you do in the game, in this connected world and connecting people.”

Peeing is one of the multiple iterations that allows players to asymmetrically get in touch with others in the world of Death Stranding, where strands, meant as bonds between users, are all over the place. Or so it seems. We still have limited details about the game and do not have a clear idea of what to expect when it comes out.

The game is right around the corner, too, as Death Stranding releases on Nov. 8, 2019, for the PlayStation 4.
