The Last of Us Part II has been the absolute protagonist in the latest State of Play, where it finally delivered a brand new gameplay trailer – with the long-awaited debut of former protagonist Joel – and a release date fixed at February 21, 2020.

Together with these details, Naughty Dog has also unleashed a post on PlayStation Blog written by creative director and vice president Neil Druckmann, where it provided some more insight about what the game is going to be like.

Druckmann said that the title is going to be “the longest” in Uncharted developer’s history, which should hint at a more open nature of the game in the vein of 2018’s God of War and expand on the lore of the franchise.

“What we realized pretty early on is that we were putting together Naughty Dog’s most ambitious and longest game in our 35-year history. To tell this kind of story the game needed to be massive,” revealed Druckmann in a long post also detailing the special editions.

As for the story, the developer believes that it “deals with the core question: how far would you go to exact justice against the people that hurt the ones you love?,” and that “it’s a highly emotional story with complex themes that befit the world of The Last of Us” despite introducing new characters.

The hype is at stellar levels of course, but we’ll need to wait a bit more to discover precisely what this all means for The Last of Us Part II, and how different it will be in comparison with the original game for PS3 and PS4.
