BioShock brand of dystopic future is getting a new installment, but don’t expect to become more than human any time soon.
If you have heard whisperings about a new BioShock game over recent months, then 2K Games will have just made your day. The company has announced that a new BioShock game is, as rumored, currently in development. Cloud Chamber Studios are handling the development of the next game in the series.
If you have never heard of Cloud Chamber Studios, that’s because the studio was established specifically for this project. The studio is headed up by Kelly Gilmore, who brings 18 years of experience with her from games such as Sid Meier’s Civilization, and the XCOM series. The team itself consists of several developers who were involved in both the original BioShock and its sequels. Hoagy de la Plante (Creative Director), Scott Sinclair (Art Director) and Jonathan Pelling (Design Director), are all series veterans. The other members of the team have worked on Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, Star Wars, and the Battlefield series.
Taking over an established and much-respected series for their first game might seem like a daunting task, but Gilmore says the opportunity was too good to pass up. “The chance to start a new studio under one of the most successful publishing labels in the interactive entertainment industry – all while working on an iconic franchise with incredibly talented and kind people – was a once in a lifetime opportunity.” She said in an interview with MCVUK, “In the brief time we’ve been working on this project, I’ve developed a very high level of confidence in this team.”
Gillmore also says that the game will be in development for “the next several years,” so don’t expect to see screenshot or gameplay any time soon. Targeted to release in the next console cycle, this will be the first game in the series since 2013’s critically acclaimed BioShock: Infinite.
