Hank Pym is stepping back into the spotlight for Marvel’s new Avengers game.
Square Enix put a massive light on Crystal Dynamics and their upcoming Avengers game, and while we didn’t see a lot of actual gameplay, we did get an idea of what content the game will be getting post-launch.
Players will start with a base roster of Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Iron Man, but from there, free DLC content will expand that roster by adding new heroes to the game – starting with Ant-Man.

And this isn’t the Ant-Man most casual Marvel fans are used to; instead, we are getting the original man who created the suit, Hank Pym. Scott Lang is cool, but adding the OG Ant-Man to the squad has fans excited, especially since it looks like Crystal are trying to distance themselves from the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the start.
The middle-aged Pym comes out of a portal toting a considerable energy cannon, which he proceeds to use on a giant robot to shrink it. We didn’t see any form of a suit on the hero, but using gadgets without a size-changing costume is a common occurrence for the scientist. It is highly unlikely that they won’t eventually show him shrinking down and implementing that into the primary, action-oriented gameplay later on.
One of the main points before this announcement was Crystal, ensuring that fans knew all of the DLC content for their game would be free and no loot-boxes or pay-to-win microtransactions are not coming to the title. The game will be a standard, $60 purchase, and the post-launch content will come at a later date for no additional cost.
However, there is an as of yet unknown set of exclusive content coming to PlayStation 4 at some point around the launch.
Things like at least three new heroes, more maps, more missions, and extra features are going to going to get added once players get their hands on the game. The way Crystal pitched the game was giving off a games-as-a-service vibe, which was only heightened by the reveal of local and online multiplayer is available for the game, letting friends team up for story missions wherever they are.
The gameplay of the still untitled Avengers will be shown shortly as people at E3 get a chance to play the demo Square has prepared for the event. The game is set to launch for PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020.
