Assassin’s Creed: Origins Discovery Tour will be available today as part of the games latest patch. Free for those who own the game, or $20 as a standalone, the mode will feature 75 Tours that promise to teach us all about Ancient Egypt.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins is set in a wonderfully detailed Ancient Egypt. As much fun as it is to do what Assassins do best, the world that acts as a stage for Bayek’s adventures has its own allure. Today, Ubisoft is adding Discovery Tour to the game. Discovery Tour will allow for combat free exploration of the world, either at your own pace, or by following the 75 themed Tours that the developer has created.

Throughout its existence, one of the most fascinating parts of the Assassin’s Creed series has been the Database, a collection of educational notes on important people, places, and events that updates as you discover them in-game. Assassin’s Creed Origins is taking that concept several steps further with Discovery Tour, a new mode that lets players explore the game’s massive re-creation of Egypt and delve into its history firsthand.

This is all very interesting, offering both insight into a significant portion of human history, and also offering us clues as to how developers build these giant worlds. The Discovery Tour is a reaction to teachers saying that they use the series during their history classes. Ubisoft have tried to make their game world into an educational tool that will assist these teachers in the classroom. I think this is one of the better uses of a game world, and would love to see more developers replicate it.

Those who already own Assassin’s Creed: Origins will receive the mode for free. It will arrive with the 1.3.0 patch later today. It can also be purchased as a standalone product for $20. I’m really excited to get my hands on this and see how it is implemented. Keep an eye out for my thoughts on the Discovery Tour mode later in the week.
