Pokémon Go Taiwan released a new commercial that was about the upcoming new Buddy Pokémon system that Niantic originally announced. However, the commercial was quickly taken down, suggesting that the video was released too early.

The Buddy Pokémon functions similarly to that of Pokémon Amie, Pokémon Refresh and Pokémon Camp in the mainline games. Using Pokémon Go’s AR capabilities, players can interact with their chosen Pokémon in the real world, via your phone, you can pet your Pokémon or feed them berries.

The commercial is framed very relatedly to the marketing of Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. Nostalgia is a key feature of the ad, showcasing a young boy getting a stuff Squirtle as a gift. We view the boy playing with his Squirtle for the first half of the ad, highlighting the attachment he has to it.

The latter half of the commercial shows the boy now a young man, playing Pokémon Go on his phone. On his phone, he is petting a Squirtle in the game; then suddenly Squirtle is in the real world walking beside him.

The closing moments of the video show the young man walking with his Squirtle to a park filled with other people walking with their Pokémon.

The trailer is relatively effective, carefully using nostalgia to draw in the young adult demographic who grew up with Pokémon. There’s also a holiday feel to the commercial, with the boy getting his stuff Squirtle in a gift box, making it appropriate for this season. The music is sentimental, and it makes the Buddy Pokémon feature something that any Pokémon fan can get behind on. Who doesn’t want to have their very own Pokémon following them around in the real world?

The release of this trailer seems to imply that the Pokémon Buddy system is coming relatively soon. If the feature is appeasing as it is shown in the trailer, then it may be worth it for lapse Pokémon Go players to pick up the game again.
