As Destiny 2 players gear up for the year of content ahead, today’s Activision Blizzard earnings call featured a heavy tease for a new mode—one the developer hopes will be a big departure from the core game. Could it be battle royale?
On the earnings call, Activision Blizzard Chief Corporate Officer Dennis Durkin teased the addition of a new mode for Destiny 2, alongside the release of the as-yet unnamed third expansion this fall. Durkin said the mode is unique among first-person shooter games and a big departure for Destiny.
“We think [it] will be an incredibly engaging new mode,” Durkin said. “One that introduces a whole new style of play for first-person shooter gaming generally, and certainly for the shooting experience Destiny created. It’s a really exciting development and it’s one of the things that we feel will really speak to the community when it comes out in the fall.”
Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, recently hosted a select group of top players at its offices in Seattle to try out and give feedback on some of the new content. Durkin mentioned on the earnings call that Bungie got a “very positive response” from these players, particularly in regards to the “power” and the “rewards.”
Don’t expect to hear much about the new mode immediately, though. Further information about the content is coming at the E3 conference in Los Angeles next month, according to Durkin.
With Fortnite mentioned multiple times throughout the earnings call, and Activision Blizzard representatives saying that the company is paying attention to the genre and how to potentially incorporate it into its existing IP, it is possible that the new Destiny 2 mode could be battle royale.
Call of Duty, another major Activision Blizzard title, is reportedly getting a battle royale mode, perhaps also for the Nintendo Switch. Game developers are falling over themselves to capture the popularity of the battle royale craze, which first hit critical levels with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and has since been taken to the point of cultural phenomenon by Fortnite.
Destiny 2’s second expansion, Warmind, arrives next Tuesday, May 8.
