In an unexpected announcement from Microsoft during their E3 2019 conference, they announced they had acquired Double Fine Studios.

Double Fine was founded in 2000 by Tim Schafer, who is the mastermind behind Psychonauts, Grim Fandango, Brutal Legend, Day of the Tentacle, and Broken Age.

Following the announcement, they showed off a new Psychonauts 2 gameplay trailer.

This announcement marked it as the eighth studio Microsoft Games Studios has acquired since they first announced during E3 2018. During the conference, Schafer joked about being a team player and was eager to jump into the creative process.

Schafer did not make any further remarks on what this partnership was going to bring to his studio. For now, he and his team are too focused on Psychonauts 2. After they wrap up that game, which is scheduled to launch sometime in 2019, it’s unknown what they have planned moving forward. We may hear more about Schafer later this week as he shares more details about what we can expect from this partnership.
