Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas heads to Xbox One backwards compatibility in June

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and several other Rockstar Games classics launch on Xbox One next week.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and several Rockstar Games classics are coming to Xbox One next month, joining the console’s backward compatibility program.

Starting June 7, Xbox gamers can play Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis on their Xbox One, meaning Xbox owners can simply download the games online and play. Alternatively, players with the original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs for each title can simply insert their copy into their Xbox One, download the game, and play.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas launched on Xbox in 2005 after originally releasing on PlayStation 2 in 2004. The game proved a major success for the franchise, selling over 12 million copies on PlayStation 2 and over 25 million globally across platforms. Taking place in a fictional rendition of California during the 1990s, San Andreas is often credited with breaking Grand Theft Auto into mainstream popularity and remains one of the most critically acclaimed titles within the series today.

This isn’t the first time Rockstar Games has brought back its classic titles to modern consoles. ESRB rereleases for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, and several other classic Rockstar games were also rated by the ESRB last September for PlayStation 4. This sparked speculation that Rockstar will continue porting and rereleasing popular titles and spin-offs from the past. Whether that will include Red Dead Redemption for PlayStation 4 remains unclear, even though the game is set to receive a sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, this fall.
