The Epic Games Store free game promotion continues with Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero next week.
Epic Games has announced the next two games to be offered free on its storefront, and they’re two of the most exciting ones yet. From August 15-22, Epic Games Store users can grab Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero for free.
Initially released in 2016 by developer Heart Machine, Hyper Light Drifter is a blazing fast, brutally difficult 2D action game that its creators has likened to a cross between The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Diablo. In addition to its twitchy, ultra-satisfying combat, it boasts an incredible score, a killer art style, a Soulsborne level of hidden narrative depth. It was heaped with glowing reviews when it came out, and for my money, it’s one of the best games of the current generation.
Mutant Year Zero just came out late last year, with an expansion and a Switch port dropping at the end of July. It’s a turn-based tactical RPG sort of like X-Com with giant anthropomorphic ducks. It blends stealth gameplay with its tactical combat, letting players sneak around to set up ambushes and even drop in and out of combat to take out stragglers at their leisure. Based on a popular tabletop RPG, Mutant Year Zero has a vibrant world and a wicked sense of humor to round out its excellent turn-based battles. The recently released DLC, Seeds of Evil, adds a new party member along with new story missions.
The Epic Games Store started offering one free week every two weeks when it launched earlier this year, then ramped it up to one free game per week during the Epic Mega Sale, later announcing that it would extend the once-a-week offer until the end of this year. With all the negative attention focused on the Epic Games Store at the moment, it’s the one thing Epic is doing that seems to have everybody on board. If you haven’t picked it up yet, you can grab GNOG, a tactile, technicolor puzzle game, until the next promotion begins August 15.
