Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Will Include 2D Events

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will include ten 2D events that make use of various characters’ 8-bit and 16-bit sprites.

The next game in the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series is coming out in a few months and includes more than 20 Olympic events for Mario, Sonic, and their friends to compete against in the game. There are 21 events along with 10 more events in 2D.

Sega recently revealed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 includes 10 events that get played 2D scape. Characters participating in the event take on their original 8-bit or 16-bit appearances from their NES or Sega Genesis days. Unlike the 3D events, these 2D events were inspired by the events that Olympic athletes participated in during the Tokyo 1964 Summer Olympics. Events that are playable in this 2D mode include:

  • 100m
  • 10m Platform (Diving)
  • 400m Hurdles
  • Gymnastics – Vault
  • Judo
  • Kayak Single (K-1) 1000m
  • Long Jump
  • Marathon
  • Shooting – Trap
  • Volleyball
