Mortal Kombat 11 was a huge hit when it launched last month. It did so well, it was the best-selling game from April 7 to May 4 across all platforms, making it one of the few games to dominate in every console market the title was available on at launch. The last game to do this was Guitar Hero III in October 2007.

Across the three major consoles, PlayStation 4, the Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, Mortal Kombat 11 was listed at the number one spot. In total, video games profits were able to generate a total of $427 million for April 2019, according to the NPD Group’s data.

With such a successful launch, the developers behind Mortal Kombat 11 to continue to keep up with numerous in-game events and have years of content planned for the game. It’s been the most significant launch for an entry in the franchise since it first launched 27 years ago.

There have been complaints about the game, though. Many players noticed early on how much a grind the in-game currency was going to be as they progressed further into the game. Players use the currency to unlock character appearance items, finishing moves, and concept art. While these appearance items do not change the quality of a player’s gameplay, it limits the player’s character appearance choices to make an ideal version of their favorite fighter.

We have no details on what we can expect from that content, but it’ll likely be in-game events, character-based weekends, ways to acquire in-game currency much more quickly, and new characters to join in the fighting.

The first DLC officially announced by Netherrelm Studios is Shang Tsung, a powerful warlock who sucks the soul of other fighters to acquire their abilities. We do not have a release date for the character yet, or any details about the different characters that are going to release alongside him.
