Tripwire Interactive’s shark simulator Maneater debuted at last year’s E3, and this year we got another look at the gameplay along with some new information about the game.
Maneater debuted at last year’s E3, and this year, we got a new trailer showing off some CGI head-banging, followed by some pre-alpha gameplay footage.
Developed by Tripwire Interactive, Maneater is something like a video game version of Jaws — with you in the title role. As Tripwire explained, the game revolves around a reality TV show showing your battle with a gnarly fisherman named Scaly Pete.
When the game was first shown off at last year’s E3, it was actually being developed by a different team, at Blindside Interactive. Tripwire acquired the game from that developer since then and has reworked it quite a bit from what we originally saw, seeming to add a lot more depth to the systems of what used to be a much more lighter, arcade-like gameplay experience.
Tripwire describes the game as a “SharkPG,” letting you develop your man-eating powers through an RPG-like progression system. You gain experience by chomping down on lesser animals to grow up, become more powerful, and eventually even evolve new abilities. You can see the full interview that aired at the show below, where the developer goes into a bit more detailed about your shark’s stats and the story of Maneater, but there’s not a whole lot to chew on just yet.
There’s no release date yet, unfortunately, but Tripwire said you should expect the game to come out some time before next year’s E3. When it comes out, Maneater will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store.
