Hero shooter Paladins is the latest game to join the ever-popular battle royale genre, Hi-Rez Studios announced today.

The mode, which is free to play and will come sometime in 2018, is called Paladins: Battlegrounds. Like other games in the genre, it will pit 100 players against each other in an effort to be the last man standing.

The mode will be played on a large map in 20-minute matches, and players will fight for loot in a number of outposts. There will also be zeppelins that drop legendary gear throughout the map, all while players are pushed into smaller regions thanks to a rolling fog.

If this sounds familiar, it should, because it follows the same basic formula as other games in the genre like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale.

But what could set Paladins: Battlegrounds apart from the rest is that it’s a hero shooter, and the characters will maintain their abilities and also be able to use mounts, just like in the base game.

This could be the first of many attempts by game developers and publishers to try and capitalize on the success of games like PUBG and Fortnite: BR. It appears as though 2018 could turn into a veritable battle royale of battle royale games.
