After there being a coy hint on the possibility that PlayStation Studios may have acquired Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima himself has put the rumors to rest, stating that the studio will be staying as an independent.
Kojima went to Twitter to share a picture of the new PlayStation Studios banner, which initially sparked rumors today of the potential of an acquisition. A few minutes later, he quote tweeted with his original tweet saying, “It sounds misleading, but Kojipro has been and will continue to be an independent production studio.” Another fuel that added to the fire is that Kojima Productions moved locations at the end of March.
It seems that PlayStation’s decision to update its studios banner with Death Stranding is simply because Sony owns the IP and to help market Death Stranding Director’s Cut on the PlayStation 5.
Today following the acquisition rumors, industry insider Jeff Grubb also shared that the Kojima Productions Xbox deal that has been rumored for a year now is still in the works.
Sony’s PlayStation may not be acquiring Kojima Productions, but the company is still in a good place as they have recently acquired many developers, including Bluepoint, Bungie, and Haven Studios, with more planned to come, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan.
